Very excited about my next show!

It’s in a couple weeks at Public Assembly (May 30 to be exact) playing along with 2 of my favorite artists Hussle Club and Kimberly Nichole and one of my favorite DJs (and my DJ when I play without the band) Yamez.

It’s the first of what will hopefully be many shows in a monthly residency I will be doing where I present new music of my own and also try and put on other exciting new (or new-ish) artists and give them a forum to do the same.

Last night’s show at Rock Paper Soul with Sy Smith was incredibly fun and incredibly dope. Thank you to everyone who came out. The shows and the music keep rolling on! So on May 3rd I will be back at my new favorite spot DROM (85 Avenue A btwn 5th & 6th) performing with the full band and sharing the bill with a couple of other great singers, Domijo (@JeSuis_Domijo) and Paul Rivers Bailey (@riversbailey). It is an early show being presented by ROCK PAPER SOUL (@ROCKPAPERSOUL) who put on great monthly indie soul events all over the city and I am honored that they are putting me on!

The show is early (it runs from 6:30-8:30) perfect to come by after work, have a drink and hear some good music. I’m also excited to say that the show is sort of a “pre-show” for the Sy Smith & Zo! (@syberspace) show that ROCK PAPER SOUL is presenting immediately after my show. For those of y’all who ain’t familiar, this is Sy Smith:

MY NEXT COUPLE SHOWS...

I’m happy to say that I have more than a few exciting shows coming up over the next month or so… First, I’m very happy that Maggie asked me to perform at this benefit she’s putting together at DROM on April 17. It’s the Switchboard 1 year anniversary party and I’ll be sharing the bill/stage with some very talented folks… Party Supplies, Nick Catchdubs, Autobot of Flosstradamus, DJ Wonder, Musa and of course TELEPHONED. Should be a blast it’s only $5 to get in and it’s for a good cause (to read more about it go here: http://www.active.com/donate/kona12nyc/Maggiehorn).

This is also the first show I’m gonna be doing with my new DJ, the highly talented DJ Yamez. I don’t know many (or any) who can do what he does as far as bringing both talent, skills and selection so I’m excited to be working with him. I’m also happy to say that I will be back at DROM again 2 weeks later on May 3rd in a slightly different context… Still ironing out a few details (which I will fill in here later) but what I CAN tell you is that it’s an early/afterwork show, I will be performing with the full 5 piece band and that it’s gonna be great!

NEW MUSIC! FREE MUSIC!! ESTELLE "THANK YOU" (REMIX FEATURING MATTIE SAFER)

Sometimes you hear a song on the radio and it just captures your attention because there ain’t nothing else like it. And Estelle has been doing that lately. I loved her since “American Boy” and more lately I dug “Break My Heart” (and was glad that Rick Ross was back on it doing his “deeper than rap” vibe again), so when I started hearing this new track “Thank You” earlier this winter I was super pleased Estelle had come back strong yet again. And I’m happy to see that it’s caught on and been a big hit!

The track is like an oasis in the musical desert that is modern R&B radio. There just ain’t hardly NOTHIN’ out there right now gettin’ any play, and very little of it feels like this. It’s nice to hear something with this kind of soulful vibe (written by Akon no less, who I miss from the radio, I think that’s him on the backgrounds).

As you can read, I’m a fan. I was inspired, so over the weekend I went into the studio and put together a little homemade remix. I turned it into a duet, I imagined trying to capture the moment when a couple splits up and thought it could be interesting to bring the male perspective into it a bit. I hope she don’t mind, and I hope that I’ve done the track justice. More importantly, I hope you like it!

I’m back. Literally. I’m back from a week in Tulum and it was fantastic. Feeling brand new and recharged… More on that later, but in the meantime I’ve been making some changes and improvements around here, and what with all the newness I thought it was high time to hit y’all off with some new music.

WHITNEY HOUSTON

First of all, Whitney Houston is one of my favorites. The clarity of her tone, the playfulness, the power, the feeling, the songs, those huge notes. Sometimes I just sit and marvel and think “damn, I wish I could do that.” She was, is and will continue to be a beautiful, inspirational, motivational woman, singer and artist. The Whitney Houston cassette was a fixture in the car on childhood road trips and I used to stare at that album cover cuz I just thought she was beautiful. Listening to the various “All-Whitney Tributes” playing on the radio today is a reminder of the near inescapability her music in the first half of my life. She had SO MANY DAMN HITS! In the ’80s and ’90s she was just always there…

Which leads to the second point. I have no particular judgements on the alleged causes of her death or the lifestyle choices that led to it. Because ultimately there is no one who will really know what it was like to carry the weight of being “WHITNEY HOUSTON” the biggest female artist in the world, 24/7/365 for all those years. And there’s very few in the world who can even really begin to relate. But I imagine that having that kind of expectation and pressure weighs the spirit down and it’s a hard rock to get out from under. So to those feeling cynical I’d say to think about that. Try and understand and love and find the bonds that bring us together rather than judging and finding things to separate us from each other.

I know there’s a lot of sadness out there but remember: With music, life goes on. R.I.P. Whitney Houston and thank you for giving so much good music. We loved, love and will continue to ALWAYS love you…

I’ve been super busy with the live show all December and for that and a couple other reasons didn’t make a new Christmas song this year. But I think enough people didn’t hear the one I did last year that I thought I’d put it up again for you here (both versions).

PLAYING 2 SHOWS

For anyone who might not be following me on Twitter (http://twitter.com/mattiesafer) seemed like it was past due to make note of the fact that I will be playing 2 shows in the next week here in NYC.

Both shows are at Dominion NY. I’ve been rehearsing with my new live band for a couple of months now and while we’re not quite ready for the big thing this show is a little different. Islands (the main act) are presenting their new album in a small, intimate seated theater and offered me the chance to open up, present some of my own new material and “set the mood.”

So in the spirit of the evening, my performance is going to be pretty laid back, featuring just myself singing, piano and guitar. It’s been a lot of fun preparing for the show and it should be a beautiful night of music. I have the privilege of playing with some talented individuals and I am happy to have an opportunity to present a show for y’all.

If you have a CMJ Badge entry is free this Saturday night, otherwise you can get advance tickets directly from the venue (http://www.dominionny.com/). I’m not so sure on the details for next Saturday yet but I know I will be on fairly early this Saturday (7 pm) so try and make it early!

It was a fun record to make. It was in the middle of a huge snow storm in NYC. My old studio was on the 16th floor with great views of the Hudson. Don’t get me wrong, it was a dump but it did have lots of windows, a reasonably unique feature for most New York spots.

There’s all kinds of crazy remixes and stuff… (I thought there was news on it here: http://www.modularpeople.com/news/stream-beni-someone-just-like-you/10034.html but there isn’t. Sorry!)

Hey hey.

I know that this isn’t really “news” anymore, but I’ve been waiting to say something about this until the words came naturally and the time felt right. And today feels about right.

So what can I say? Mehdi was one of the sweetest dudes I knew. Genuine as fuck and just enjoying life… The look of happiness on his face while he was DJing was one of the best examples of living in the moment that I can think of. That’s the mark of an artist. That’s what I wanna be like. The picture above was taken at Santos Party House and it was truly a great night. Pedro and Mehdi ripping into it, just owning the room playing the best music in the world. An incredibly drunk Kid Cudi kept on hopping on the mic and just rambling, had me cracking up. Pedro kept calling me JT cuz of that stupid hat. :)

And then the last time I saw him was at Le Bain. Mehdi, Pedro and Stretch playing hip hop for the last hour… So much fun. I would go see Mehdi every time he was in NY and it never disappointed. He was a friend, probably my favorite DJ in the world and a great producer as well.

Here’s a couple things. One is a clip of my favorite Mehdi song, “Tunisia Bambaata” from the Pocket Piano EP:

The second is a little mixtape/mini-album something or other that Pedro sent today. It’s made up I guess of outtakes/ideas that Mehdi made while working on the Lucky Boy album. It’s a real nice listen and a good way to remember a good dude.

Some of the more of astute among you might have noticed that I had a record come out yesterday over in the UK. A collaboration I did with my good old friend Ben Rymer and his production duo Jam Factory. This is their, 3rd release and the song is called “One Night Stand.” Listen to some snippets below…

I can’t remember why I was there but for some reason I was staying in London at the Rymer’s flat. It was shortly after I had left the group. We were hanging out and a bit bored so we decided to make a track. The whole thing took about 3 days from writing to final conception. Over the course of 2 years it was mixed and remixed by many folks (I think the remix EP is on the way) and now it’s available for you to go buy… I’m pretty sure it’s vinyl only though for y’all digital types… Trendy London fucks… :) Maybe someone will pick up the license on it though and we’ll get a digi-release?

More music on the way soon! Originals (the long awaited “Future Gospel Sound” mixtape is FINISHED) and another collaboration, this one with everyone’s favorite Antipodean BENI! Should be a great summer…

RADIO SILENCE... PRE-2K LIFE... NEW MUSIC FROM BL'EVE

Since returning from all my travels I know it’s been pretty much dead on the wire… Apologies to anyone who might have missed me. I’m still here, I’m still good and I just been taking a step back from it. Not the music, mind you. I’ve been writing songs and singing all day. Got some new joints I’m excited to record.

Rather, taking a step back from… blogs… Twitter… Facebook. It’s like living a pre-2K life (ok not really cuz I got a iphone and all that but you get the idea). Those who enjoy them that’s great I ain’t saying to stop… but it was all just starting to sound like noise to me. I felt like it was getting in the way of really being able to hear my own thoughts. So I just cut it off and I haven’t really looked back since. I ain’t saying I won’t be back. Hell, I might be back tomorrow, who knows? But for now, this life, this vibe, this speed feels really ice and I’m gonna keep on cruisin’ right about here.

There will be new music and videos and photos and all that down the line too. Don’t worry.

For now, I’d like to share a new track from my friend BL’EVE called “Strawberry Fields.” It feels really right on a rainy NY morning. Hope that it feels right for you too, wherever you are:
